They promise not to turn into white anglo saxon protestants ?

I can't see how that is a problem. I am a Londoner and when I see another white man I say snap.

Are you a white Londoner too?  Snap.

Those figures don't make great reading but don't forget wages in  the UK are higher than most . So 29% of the average earning in the UK is always going to be better than 38% in Poland . Im not going to look it all up as Im off to work but a standard of living table would Im sure see our pensioners in the top half of the table not rock bottom .

Ive just asked  Mrs SW if Waspi will effect who she votes for . She said if they are still buzzing around in December she will  change her mind on global warming and vote Green . I said NO not waspi , WASPI the pension thingy . Fecking pension she said as she left for work ,they stole that years ago .

There are several problems here.

1) Average wages are skewed by the top earners; you need a carefully tailored way of accurately comparing different quartiles across the EU

2) Regional disparities are in play here, not to spam the forum with graphs and stuff but check these things out..

Some countries operate all pensions through a state-operated scheme. That way every working person has a pension which follows them around from employer to employer — even into self-employment. Singapore has an ingenious personal fund that can help with nearly all life's major financial transactions, from mortgages to pensions.

In the UK, those savvy enough, arrange their own pension whatever schemes their employers might put them into. That's wise when we remember some employers under-contribute to the fund or, like Maxwell, use it as a source of business money.

The UK is recognising the problems building up for its aging population and altering state pension arrangements. But it will take years (if ever) to bring demand and supply into balance.

As for the problems brought on by winter — the energy efficiency design standards of British housing has for years been lagging behind what's been practiced elsewhere.

To sum up my view: the plight of the elderly is the responsibility of everyone — government, business, employers and (mostly) ourselves. WASPI could impact the outcome of the election if it's close, but those affected can hardly say they weren't warned it was coming...
On climate change — we're talking, we're beginning to act, but we're still not doing enough...

"Why is one older person dying every seven minutes during the winter?"

It is the alcohol.

And the coal allowance.

I have always had a fantasy about spending the winter with my feet up in front of a roaring fire and a pot of something drinkable in my hand. Now that I am retired and get the £200 a year Winter Fuel Allowance for voting Tory I can afford to do it.

And why is the oldie in the Guardian's photo in front of an electric fire? Don't the kids who run the Brussels Gazette realise how expensive they are?

And finally..

QuoteWhy is one older person dying every seven minutes during the winter?

Nordic countries have much harsher conditions in the cold months, yet mortality rates are lower than in the UK

...

Over the last four winters, according to the latest official figures, nearly 120,000 people in England and Wales have died of cold weather, or factors associated with cold weather such as a virulent strain of influenza. But campaigners argue that these excess winter deaths, defined as the difference between the number of deaths that occur each winter (from December to March) and the average number of deaths during the preceding four months (August to November) and the subsequent four months (April to July), have more to do with poverty than freezing temperatures.

Yet again I start a thread only to get it wrecked.

(I don't believe you don't who the WASPI women are.)

Apparently Tory candidates have been briefed not to sign WASPI pledges during the general election campaign. Can the Tories afford to have 3.8 million women not vote Tory because of this.
