The largest ever consultation of Muslim members and supporters of Labour has found that more than one in four – 29% – have directly experienced Islamophobia in the party, while over one in three have directly witnessed it.

44% of those consulted reported that they did not believe the party takes the issue of Islamophobia seriously, and 48% said they did not have confidence in Labour to deal with Islamophobia effectively via its complaints process.

The results also show that 46% of Muslim members and supporters surveyed disagreed with the statement "I believe the Labour Party represents the Muslim community effectively", compared to 29% who agreed with the view.

Many brainless people celebrate spitting on Muslims, with their bizarre conspiracy theories that it's a world plot, by Omar Shariff to destroy the world order with kalergi-coudenhove's plan in the background (set up by the EU) to install a new Nazi regime as the second helping.. They really are very very silly people. Away from the fringe; Macron is busy right now saying Islam is 'incompatible' with France, many say it's 'incompatible' with western culture etc. Some celebrate racism and xenophobia in every single way and in every party up and down the isles you get the types; that's nothing to be celebrated - and the members often get kicked out of their party over time, as you saw with a lot of white and black members in Labour. But it's only ever a problem for many people when minorities are being racist towards white people, then it's racism, otherwise it isn't racism and is normal as you have to give minorities a lot of extra shtick for having the front not to be white and for daring to be in a white majority country.  I've actually seen people who are so brainless they took this as an anti-white racist joke, I bet plenty would..

LOL the EU and its Muslim problems are all of their own making. Don't try shifting the blame for that one , Macron seems to have had enough.
Just because I don't say anything, it doesn't mean I haven't noticed!

Shame on Jeremy Corbyn for supporting Balsamic militants like Hummus, Al Murray and Hakuna Matata.

And the unintelligible, incomprehensible nervous wrecks with a deep obsession with these things and with others (I think some Tory head actually called their own activists "mad swivel eyed loons"  ;D ) who dream up new plots daily and regularly talk to themselves really require the benefit of some counselling...

In typical blindsided grauniad liberal woolly jumper zakkenwasser style, Owen Jones fails to mention the other relevant facts - for example Starmer's intense policy of wooing the Hindu fundie Modi, a man who absolutely detests Muslims and Islam and will do anything in his power to try and disenfranchise or kill em' off.

It's quite clear that Labour have a huge number of problems, from the anti-semitism allegations and yes there is a problem among some members in that party with anti-semitism, among other blatant racism as you saw there against black, asian and other ethnic minorities too. We are talking open unabashed racism in Labour there. I've seen Labour hire openly racist councillors before, to be honest, as was the case in 'hackney north', one such defected from the Tories to Labour...

Anyway, all these parties are rotten to the core and let's just face the truth here, the Tories are still the worst of all.. no wait, the Lib Dems are the absolute worst of all, with the Tories second and Labour third. And until we find our way towards becoming a modern European nation with a plurality of parties, as others have, we will simply backslide further and further in every area.

oh come on dyno. ( good to see you back by the way)

Labour racist? Now you know im no fan of labour , and i persoanlly have them charged with being sectarian and anti semitic , but racist?

FFS dyno , this is just out there conspiracy theorist crackpot stuff.

If this screaming "racist" carrys on , very soon it will become the most meaningless overused word in the language of the english.

Give me a nice rotten to the core political party any day than one pretending to be whiter than white ( is this political correct ?) .

QuoteMost British Muslims support Labour, but their votes should not be taken for granted. A decade ago, the Labour MP Phil Woolas was ejected from parliament for lying about his Lib Dem opponent in the 2010 election – leaflets distributed by Woolas claiming that Watkins had "wooed" Islamic extremists and failed to condemn radical groups attacks were ruled by an election court to be deliberately misleading.

When the then deputy leader, Harriet Harman, said he had no future in his party, a mutiny of Labour MPs took place. This was not an isolated incident. Anti-Muslim sentiment remains ingrained in the Labour party, as revealed in a recent report by the Labour Muslim Network, which found that 29% of Muslim members and supporters had experienced Islamophobia in the party, 44% did not believe the party took the issue seriously, and 48% didn't believe the party would deal with it effectively in its complaints process.

Which brings us to the case of the property developer David Abrahams, who funded New Labour reportedly to the tune of hundreds of thousands of pounds. After Keir Starmer wrote to wealthy former donors – Abrahams included – asking for them to resume their financial support, the property developer declared that he had set up a direct debit to provide Labour with cash. Since then, a litany of Islamophobic tweets has been exposed by the Guardian: from declaring he doesn't "know how to divide political Islam from moderates and fundamentalists" because: "It is the very nature of the beast!" to declaring Israel's neighbours "chose terrorism and invented suicide bombers".

Labour has said it cannot find any record of new funds from Abrahams and will not accept any of his money, but an investigation is to take place given he is a member of the party. If any good comes out of this episode, it is to open up a conversation about how Islamophobia has been mainstreamed – including in many progressive circles – and must now be fought. After all, Labour is right to tackle antisemitism within its own ranks and the record level of anti-Jewish hate crimes in British society as a whole also needs to be confronted. Now that the Equality and Human Rights Commission has issued directives that Labour is legally bound to implement in order to tackle antisemitism, the party must confront its wider problems of racism, too.

As well as Islamophobia, black, Asian and minority ethnic Labour party staff members have expressed fears of a "hierarchy of racism", not least after a leaked report suggested alleged racist abuse by Labour officials against black Labour MPs. Failures by the Labour leadership to unequivocally oppose the deportation of people who have lived in Britain since they were children – even after the Windrush scandal – only fuel such claims. Indeed, it is notable that Abrahams himself once tweeted that black South Africans he spoke to "preferred white rule as less corrupt and more viable and professional", suggesting prejudices not confined to Islamophobia.

It's worth reconsidering Warsi's comments made a decade ago. If Abrahams isn't expelled from the party, then what message is to be sent, both to Muslims and the bigots who menace them? Fears that Islamophobia is permissible, and even officially sanctioned, will have greater justification.

It underlines, too, how those within Labour demanding that the leadership dilutes its dependence on trade union funding in favour of wealthy individuals are inviting trouble. Unions are democratically accountable mass organisations with publicly transparent policy agendas. Wealthy individuals will open up their cheque books and declare, as Abrahams has, that he would be "happy to donate more" if the party commits to "the right policies". Labour was founded to be the political wing of working people – the clue being in the name – and attempts to distance itself from these roots will prove morally hazardous.
