An even stranger Boxing Day....

Boxing day from my childhood was generally a day of sitting round playing various card and board games, notably a session of Monopoly which would begin at about the time mum handed out plates of turkey sandwiches with whatever pickles we had (usually picked onion and little else), said session ending with home made chocolate cake at about six o clock.

Boxing day in recent years has been a mix of the odd foray to the coast path to get ones innards blown about by lashing wind and festive gales, and a return to the house to be totally ignored by kids and grandkid alike each of whom had their node embedded in a phone or laptop....

Well this year .... was a bit of a wierd return to my youth. Moira and Jennifer laid out a whole load of cold meats and stuff on the dining room. and we played Cluedo and some wierd card game with a musical challenge box forcing you to take extra cards if your reaction time was stuffed, and ending with some surreal game where you stuff plastic pizzas down a piig and then inflate his guts by pressing his head a number of times until his shirt blows open as his guts can take no more ....

Cluedo has been seriously dumbed down. The woke elite removed Mrs White for being too pale and female, and replaced her with a mixed race character of dubious background.

But they also introduced "clue" cards. The die now have a magnifying glass symbol where the '1' spot used to be. Roll this and before you move you must take a "clue" card from a pile and do as it says.  Like the Chance and Community Chest in Monopoly, these cards are a mix of mandatory instructions (e.g. any player holding Miss Scarlett in their hand must reveal her to the whole group, placing her face up in a discard pile) and less rigid 2 "pick a room / person / weapon and request it be shown to all"

These cards have the effect of radically shortening the game, as if the average 21st century child does not have the attention span or attention to detail of their 20th century counterpart.

Their forced use revealed the murder weapon (in one game) and location (in another)  long before any had rolled enough dice to get to the room. A shame, i think. I shall dig out my original version and show Melissa how we used to play the game. Not that she needs the assistance of this dumbing down, she has been able to memorise scripts  for her various musical theatre performances at the drop of a hat for years, and not just HER parts, but EVERYONES.

At midnight on the 31st Moira, Jennifer and I are going to go outside, stand in the middle of the pentagram that stands newly built as a flaming sun in the middle of the new patio, they with gin and tonic, me with an Oban Scotch, and at the strike of midnight we are going to scream "!JUMANJII" for all we are worth

I am told this incantation will banish the pox from the land.

And so it might, but just in case, i have the latin incantation to raise satan to grant a wish from John Dee's masterwork grimoire and I might just try that ....

It was indeed a strange Christmas Day

At 3am i sat bolt upright realising a piece of code I'd written for the new job had a flaw. At 9:30 I was fixing it. But not before taking a phone call from my best friend of some 40 years, who lost his wife three days ago because the Welsh Assembly twats shut down all cancer therapy, causing her death.

There will be another funeral sometime between now and next June of another of my friends for many years. In his case he was denied access to the consultant because he coughed in the waiting room. It took three weeks to organise a COVID test that proved him negative, but by then the queue was several months long and by the time he got to the front of it his case was terminal too.

I suppose it's one way of killing off BREXIT voters so HDQQ will win the next referendum ....

At 10:00 I collected my eldest and grand daughter and brought her back here for the day, my youngest had to make do with a video call to her fiance instead of spending Christmas Day with him.

I was strangely able to shovel down almost a normal Christmas Lunch, with a mini dressed crab as a starter. And a strawberry flan to follow. Unheard of for me, I hate strawberries.

Or rather I did until I came out the other side of my Covid positive bedridden week and a half during which I ate next to nothing. Now I find I can't stand beer. If this persists I am going to pick up a machete and behead every bloody Chinaman I see until the desire for a pint returns. Because to f**k with a Vikings desire for drink is an act of war in any language

Spent far too much time doing sod all except watching telly too.

Ah well.

Heres to 2021.  .

Bright Young Thing

Merry Christmas to you all.

It's been a strange Christmas Day, we caught up with family via zoom so that was a bonus. I've stuffed myself with dinner, and my daughter and the grandkids were able to join us - so it feels like I'm blessed. All my family have made it through this awful year and I have certainly realised the things that matter and the things that don't.

Toots - I hope you're feeling a little better now. We're always here if you need us (says me who disappeared for several months......but I'm here now and I'm always around to listen) or via zoom or private chat.

Right I'm away to find some trifle and more prosecco!

Can understand the sentiment John, my old mum was the religious one my dad told me you get one go at this but when you're dead that's it nothing and you're a long time dead.

Cheerful eh! It it's the only certainty in life......you die, 8)  8)

I won't wish a Merry Christmas to the total moron who woke the entire village at 02.00 hours this morning racing around the village with a car that sounded like a Lancaster Bomber with no exhaust system.
Probably the local chavs trying out their new big bore exhaust, and just sharing their Christmas cheer at finding it under the tree. Ho,ho,ho Merry Christmas chavs.
Just because I don't say anything, it doesn't mean I haven't noticed!

MERRY CHRISTMAS

To put matters in perspective, by Christmas 1914 the old British regular Army had bleed to death and in turn had inflicted such casualties on the German army of largely young reservists that it was called the Slaughter of the Innocents.

Even so, both sides agreed that none of this was cause for bad manners and agreed a series of impromptu but stlll effective Christmas ceasefires.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to one and all !!

So.

Merry Christmas to everyone except that prick Drakeford whose clowning around has f**ked Christmas and New Year for so many, and his f**king clown sidekick Effing Gethin the Diversity candidate whose such a prick at his job they had to find a woman to do almost all of it for him. May they catch the South African COVID and be purged from us like the bad memories they are

But to EVERYONE else on here, yes even Gerry...

I just hope everyone has a happy day. I was really looking forward to it and was happily prepared to spend it quietly here on my own. The kids will be on Skype/Zoom later, my lunch is prepared. I will be interested to hear what the Queen has to say this afternoon and do wonder if she was able to record it late enough to include the Brexit deal. Perhaps BJ was hoping that she would but maybe it was simply too close to the Christmas wire.

Having said all that I feel inexplicably a little sad today. No particular reason that I can think of and no doubt it will pass. So to everyone, love one another, be kind, enjoy your day, don't eat too much it will simply make the New Year a diet one!
