Hi Sampan. I'm back after a lengthy lay off - well it's something to do! I see you are now promoting the delights of another totalitarian regime as opposed to Putin's Russia. There are not many Chinese sites that promote western ideologies are there? It has been said that the best form of government is a benevolent dictatorship but this is a theoretical concept that is hard to tie down logically - to whom is it benevolent, at what expense, who checks that such benevolence is well directed and, if not, how does the dictator get replaced. I bet there are not too many websites like this one in China.

That said, China has made impressive progress economically and technologically and now is happy with allowing a higher degree of free enterprise and seemingly limitless rewards to innonovators (all be it a capitalist concept). And, given the rise of "populism" in democracies there is perhaps the need for some way of ensuring daft and dangerous leaders do not emerge or bad decisions result from popular presentations of simple solutions to complex questions. These are difficult questions for today's democracies, especially with the spread of popular forums and websites that teach people complete b*llocks.

I have not been to China (my wife and daughter have though) but I have had business contacts with people from China. I posted something more substantial about this but the vagaries of this forum software and my lack of understanding resulted in it being lost (though I have asked Nick if it exists somewhere and can be recovered). Though only expressed privately, it seems that some Chinese are flag waving enthusiasts and others exactly the opposite but are afraid to talk about it openly (for obvious reasons).

If you have not done so I suggest you read the books by Jung Chang and also "the Vagrants" by Yiyun Li for an idea of life during and just after the cultural revolution. Life is more free now but punishments for stepping out of line are dire.
