You were right the first time.  The Alpha variant is not the original virus, it was a variant that was first detected in November last year.  But the fact that the Alpha variant came and went demonstrates that that's what variants do, as did the original virus.

You are conflating an entire virus with separate variants.  SARS-COV2 is not extinct, just the original version.

The Spectator Covid tracker used to provide a graph which has gradually shown that 100% of cases in the UK are now Delta, but they don't have it on the page any more.
