The Heads of our Secret Services, Special Branch, Special Forces etc, do not live in the shadows as some may imagine their operatives do.

It is not uncommon for the Heads of these services to brief poloticians or asked questions by parliamentary committees in the Commons, one at least one has made a TV Broadcast

It is the context in this instance.

I am not after all spies try to find things out that's their job, asking questions is far for the course

They don't normally ask questions on a TV program.

It is not a state secret who heads MI6 , after all they are selected by the Foreign Secretary and widely reported when any change is made

It is the fact he was at that lecture and asked a question that I find frankly puzzling given the context of the lecture.

Last night during the Richard Dimbleby lecture at the end when questions were asked for from the audience the head of MI6 identified himself and asked a question. (I nearly fell out of my chair.)
