The UK was ranked three or four in the world in pharmaceutical R&D expenditure in 2007.

But the results tended to be manufactured overseas.

Generics are different: the UK has the lowest prices for generics in Europe, for prices are around 70% lower than the originator product — rising to 90%

Warwick Smith, Director General of the British Generic Manufacturers Association (BGMA), said: "We welcome the Government providing more information on its plans to ensure appropriate supplies of medicines are available to patients in light of a no-deal Brexit. We have been working with the authorities for many months to put these plans in place, and it is right that they are In more transparent on their plans in the interests of patients as well as the supply chain.

"While we welcome the Government's efforts to help ensure that patients continue to receive their medicines in the case of a no deal Brexit, we are absolutely clear that the only way to ensure continued availability of medicines, and future launches, is to be part of European Union regulatory framework and single market. We must avoid different standards and any checks at the border otherwise there will be an inevitable impact on patient well-being."

There should not be manufacturing problems as such we make drugs in the UK as do other countries across the globe, US has Global Plants you could be right holding them back to raise the price, it would be good if those based in the UK can boost their output if possible , or if we can buy from outside of the EU or the US to make up any shortfall in stocks at a reasonable price.

The 451-page unredacted document is a record of trade discussions by officials in London and Washington over two years from mid-2017 to mid-2019 — so it's reasonably current.

It's said these documents show that the US is interested in discussing drug pricing — mainly, extending patents that stop cheaper generic medicines being used.

It's certainly true there are already severe shortages in prescription drugs.** What's not clear is if they are being hoarded ready to take advantage of price rises, or whether there's manufacturing problems.

Desperate Deflection IMHO trying to take the voters eye off the ball, its a year old report according to other journalists carried out by Officials not Ministers, not even reached discussion by the Government, it covers more than the NHS but also agriculture

If it is nothing but a really damp rotten squib, they'll make mince of it and Corbyn with it. If it really is outdated nonsense it's a ridiculous own goal. It's faded at the moment but I bet the journos are beavering away to get the back story.

I really don't know what to believe. I have just watched Corbyn deliver copies of a document over 450 pages long to each journalist sitting in front of him - obviously some sort of leak - which he says proves that the Conservatives are indeed contemplating a trade deal with the USA which includes the NHS post Brexit.

Surely this by no means proves that the NHS will be in a finalised deal. Isn't this fake news? He has stressed the vast amounts that US pharma companies will demand for meds etc. I am sure this will dominate the news items. I have never heard such a subdued media response. No doubt they are reading furiously.

It has just been revealed (Sky news) that they are dated 2016-18 so that brings up a couple of questions straight away.
