I am puzzled where resident clientele with a lot of money are in Cornwall, a lot of "high end" restaurants went tits up before the pandemic.
It is mostly either wealthy retirees or wealthy working age people with second homes, and sometimes just wealthy vosotors to the area.

Who else do you think provides all those votes for Tories down there?

There is a lot of wealth in Cornwall, but little of it is generated locally or filters down to the locals since Cornwall is one of the lowest paid areas in the country. Most of the wealth down there is brough in from outside.
We are not all in the same boat. We are in the same storm. Some of us have yachts. Some of us have canoes. Some of us are drowning.

It's ok Thomas I knew you were joking and was mostly joking myself. But what you said about never letting politics contaminate friendships I totally get and respect that on a very serious level. I am the same.

Some of my friends have an interest in politics but have very different views to me. We will often talk about this or that political issue, but none of us ever thinks it is worth falling out over.

Restaurants too, including expensive one. One top end restaurant in Lostwithiel in Cornwall frequented by clientele with a lot of money, was put permanently out of business because of Covid. I know this because a good frien of mine worked in it. It is probably one of many. I expect they are glad of any business they can get now too. Fortunately for my friend she has found a much better job in a growth industry - she works for the DWP processing Universal Credit claims.

very sad indeed. Amongst all the terror of covid , claims and counter claims , arugments about personal freedoms and all the rest is the human cost that is often ignored in all this of viable business going under because of lockdowns , the pain anguish and heartache of those working in these businesses and losing jobs , the mental health issues and all the other things largely ignored due to media hysteria and rancid headlines.

Spoke about it all on here over the last year or two.

Your friend will be having a lot more claims to process im thinking before all this is completely over.

Which fact on a less serious note demonstrates that in real life I never let politics contaminate friendships and have plenty of friends who differ from me politically, though I made new ones much more likely tio agree with me during the 6 years I spent in the Labour Party.

i rarely speak if ever about politics with friends or family , and certainly have never ever let it contaminate friendships.

QuoteIs your wife's politics the same as yours?

Wife doesnt do politics at all. No interest in politics whatsoever , doesnt vote normally , couldnt care less if scotland votes for indy or not .

And are you ever tempted to assert your nationality by surrepticiously sneaking a wee haggis onto the english breakfast dinner plate, lol.

Funny enough i cant stand haggis , im more of a fine wine caviar sort of guy from the posh part of govan.

Glasgow has come along way since the bad old days of labour , we now do afternoon tea , copious amounts of merlot and we even have inside toilets in our tenements now.

QuoteAnd yeah some of our music is good though some is highly crap. But then, both can be said of yours too.

steve im joking , well maybe only slightly about the beer.

And the food down here is cheap and cheerful, but then again Scotland is never the first nation thought of when pondering culinary delights either.

Of course we are! how can you deny the existence of  world famous culinary delights such as ashet pie or stovies from a country that eats fecking jellied eels is  a bit feckin rich.

Think of cromwell the poor bastard , who lives on a diet of vimto and pork scratchings in manchester , or deppity in mackem land living on stottie cakes and newkie brown ale , i feel like a culinary god next to those poor bastards.

..and as for plymouth , i never new i was middle class till i went there.....

QuoteBut I would be tempted to annoy you by joining the SNP

all welcome , plenty english folk in the snp contrary to  british media hysteria, there are even big yes groups like english scots for indy.

Famous englishmen like edward dwelly are cult heroes in scottish folklore for saving the gaelic language for us , and of course we cant thank margaret thatcher and boris johnson enough for the support they have given scot indy .

You are far too good to us , hell of a nice neighbours in fact. ;)

I think after the bad time the pub industry has had due to covid , we can forgive them their little misdemeanours.

And on an even less serious note, you have an English wife? I know were I living in Scotland I'd be voting SNP and in favour of independence. Is your wife's politics the same as yours?

And are you ever tempted to assert your nationality by surrepticiously sneaking a wee haggis onto the english breakfast dinner plate, lol.

And yeah some of our music is good though some is highly crap. But then, both can be said of yours too. And yeah the beer is crap much of the time but it does what it says on the tin. But I could be happier living in Scotland and would be far happier with the political scene there than the one down here. But I would be tempted to annoy you by joining the SNP. Lol

Actually, that is a rather amusing response.

I do eat out occasionally, but mostly in greasy spoon cafes because I love a full English breakfast. A full ENGLISH breakfast. I hope that doesn't trigger a rant. Lol

Not really , my wife is english , im the master at cooking a full english breakfast , and she does the english roast thing every sunday. I like the english , shit food , crap beer , decent music and women , i just dont want your politicians sticking their beaks in my country. ;)

QuoteBut the problem highlighted by Nick of thers crowding your table can happen in any of these too.

on a serious note though , i think most pubs are just glad of the trade now , and the overcrowding is something most pubs i know can only dream of.

What?

I thought only the upper classes and the bourgeois went out and did horrible things like eating out at expensive restaurants.

You old champagne socialist you!

Here was me thinking after a twelve hour shift you dressed in sackcloth and ashes and went out protesting every night witthe brothers and sisters at the plight of the poor and needy , and all the while you are out wining and dining on expensive champagne?

You little rascal.

The brothers and sisters have just been on the phone , dont bother coming back they said!!!

I do eat at Toby carveries sometimes because the food is great and reasonably priced. And have been known to have the occasional pub lunch. But I tend not to eat in expensive restaurants because they tend to be...well... wxpensive.

One of my gripes, and it's happening right now.
Sitting in a restaurant and the table next to you gets recognised by some friends. Before you know it they're all crowded round the table next to you, knocking into your table with there arses and generally ruining my night. 😠

If I drank in the same pubs I'd be very wary of the bogs.

It is those pub bogs where the only running water is your own that worry me.

Has everyone else noticed that in soap operas a lot of the drama takes place in pubs, where everyone is drinking beer but - miraculously - no one ever goes to the toilet. Unless the mens or ladies bogs have been scripted as the scene of some sort of drama.

If I drank in the same pubs I'd be very wary of the bogs. Because nobody ever goes there unless they want an argument or a fight or something.

Quite right too. You are clearly guilty and deserve whatever you get.

That said, the only Cressida I know of is Ms Dick, whose main claim to fame is her short way with Brazilian electricians. What have you done to upset her?
Daft old bugger she says she is going to investigate big ears and former valet fawcett over bungs for honour and citizenship.

Well Cressida has sprung in to action and promised to investigate,me being me and my username I should be happy that this is another brick removed from the regal edifice.

The only fly in the ointment  being the prospect of a president Bliar type.

If they expect the edifice to survive they really need to skip a generation and bin the big eared one and his confidant.

That always amused me her being described when he was married to Di as being his confidant instead of bit on the side.
