While I understand the curiosity behind these tests which have become very popular, I'm not thrilled by the idea of some company owning my genetic profile.

Why what can they do with it ?

Doesn't bother me in the least.  I was amused when a rabid female BNP supporter tried to sue the company who did a DNA test at her request and she turned out not to be the member of the  "Aryan Race" she thought.

It is universally known as the bedroom tax, and very nastily effects predominantly disabled people.

11 September 2019

More than two thirds of households subject to the bedroom tax under housing benefit are in receipt of DLA, PIP, Employment and Support Allowance, Incapacity Benefit, or Severe Disablement Allowance.

In an answer to a Parliamentary question on 9 September 2019, ( https://www.parliament.uk/business/publications/written-questions-answers-statements/written-question/Commons/2019-09-02/284641">https://www.parliament.uk/business/publ ... -02/284641">https://www.parliament.uk/business/publications/written-questions-answers-statements/written-question/Commons/2019-09-02/284641 ) the Minister for Welfare Delivery Will Quince confirmed that as at April 2019, there were -

"'240,350 households in England who had a deduction made from their housing benefit due to the removal of the spare room subsidy.

Of these, 37,350 (16 per cent) had at least one person in employment and 48,350 (20 per cent) had at least one dependent child.

Additionally, in 170,360 cases (71 per cent) the claimant or partner was receiving disability living allowance, personal independence payment, employment and support allowance, incapacity benefit, or severe disablement allowance. It is not possible to ascertain the number of disabled people in each of these households.

Figures do not include claimants on Universal Credit (UC) with a removal of the spare room subsidy (RSRS) deduction, as these data are not currently available."

Barry

You've done really well going back 900 years. It will be interesting to see how Anglo Saxon your DNA looks.

A reduction in Benefit not a Tax and only for those in Social Housing or Housing Association Properties relating to under occupancy i.e Spare Bedrooms to encourage people to downsize and free up a larger property for a family with kids.

More like one step up from being a serf. The harsh rules the estate put on their tenants are nasty. (Somewhere I have a copy of those, like the estate had the right to check what was being cooked in case it had been poached from the estate.)

Only one step down though - they bought the trees.

Not toff at all, my family had to buy the trees off of the estate, that is why there are records. (Which only finished in 1963 when one of my uncles died, and no-one carried on the family trade.)

The estate also rented housing to my family and that is another set of records.

I suspect that pre the 19th century my lot were Irish tinkers. Where there was a pint to mouch, a kettle to mend or a clock to pinch, we were there.

You poor soul - although that might explain a few things! My paternal ancestors supported King William and were mentioned in the Doomsday book with land in Essex as a reward. My SIL on the other hand is in direct line to that same King. Talk about 2 sides of the track!  :D
