On my phone provider's website they have a notice about a knock on effect:

Issues hitting all mobile networks
A serious incident is impacting data services. This is affecting all mobile phone providers. The issue has been localised to a Facebook DNS outage.

The number of end user retries is causing an overload on all mobile networks. Support teams are working on a solution to mitigate impact.

Is it the end of the world as we know it?
