Nick I would love to see you escorted out of the ferry terminal because you did not have the required paperwork.
I have been told in depth and detail by email from the ferry company what information and paperwork I need to show before being allowed on board plus  what is needed to be let out of the Roscoff ferry terminal when I arrive.
It is a A4 folder full of paperwork and permits each for myself and my wife.
Some of it is caused by the pandemic and some is caused by Brexit. (The latter being a real pain, as we are "property owners" in Brittany.)
It is best not to do anything that attracts the attention of the "authorities" in France. My wife and I in our  car surrounded by Gendarmes, army and Douaniers all tooled up with full automatic weapons plus attack dogs is a "character building" experience I don't want to happen again.

No, it's called a booking reference and WAS needed when returning to the U.K.  It took 10 minutes to book and didn't need to be done until you're on your way back, not miles in advance like you said. Also the lead time on the 2 kits arriving has nothing to do with the booking reference but you'd not know all this, having not gone anywhere. If people researched they'd know this and not have wasted money on tests in advance that they didn't need to.

The rules for Wales are still different and you cannot get electronic documentation and you still need to book tests through his state controlled interface at twice the cost of any offered to the English

I am travelling before the 24th of October so I still need the references related to the PCR tests before I can board the ferry.
It is not an arguable point it is current regulations I have to comply with.
