Or someone has had a go anyway.

I got a phone call to say that someone had just taken 800 quid out of my bank account and that I should ring such and such a number to sort it out. So I checked my account and found that nothing had been taken and thought nice try lads, and that was that.

But the bit that got me was that it was an automated message. I wasn't being conned by a fiendishly clever fraudster, just by a computer throwing out zillions of hooks in the hope of catching something.
