I want to change supplier in the next couple of months and was really put off by reports of cheaper suppliers going bust. I was with Sainsburys who offloaded me onto British Gas who started pushing for me to sign up with a new contract - with 14 days notice - a couple of weeks before the GE. I thought the timing was interesting. My contract finishes in March and so far I have ignored them. They tell me I no longer have access to that particular offer. I feel manipulated, not a comfortable feeling. I have known marriages end for less.

I'm now with shell energy which so far so good and I get a discount at shell petrol stations which is dearer than the supermarkets but Ive been wary of using supermarket fuel since filling up with contaminated fuel years ago which caused no end of problems.

TBH the sale of the utilities is one of thatchers greatest errors,I know she is revered by many but Macmillan (who lets face it was no socialist) had her banged to rights about selling off the family silver.

Whilst I have the option of saying "no", I will.

Right to privacy?

I wonder if it can be applied to electricity usage data.

When your current deal period expires, compare EON with Octopus.

I wont recommend them beyond saying that because I dont reccomend or endorse anyone beyond my personal experience

...

Which is that they're a lot cheaper than NPOWER and EON (or rather, they were a year ago, I will be checking again next month) and ...

They have stated publicly on their website that they are NOT offering smart meter installations for the foreseeable future.

....

But my experience may not apply to others in different circumstances

Just a comment.....

Good points, Cromwell. Where are these SMETS2 meters made? China by any chance? The Internet of Things is notoriously insecure with backdoors, malicious software mounting Ddos attacks, and generally spying. Why do we want to open ourselves up to that?

In France there have been a lot of problems including the meters causing fires. There is big resistance to "Linky," meters with mayors who won't let them be fitted in their communes facing jail.

Exactly and why this never ending drive to reduce manpower? What's wrong with having old fashioned meter readers who call occasionally to make sure the readings you send in are accurate.

At this rate no one will be employed and wiggles will blow a gasket and want mass compulsory euthanasia.

Right this has really put me in grumpy mode,we were bombarded with they were coming to fit one,I told them in no uncertain terms that fitting one without my consent amounted to criminal damage and I would pursue them,I said their campaign amounted to harassment and they have backed off for now.

That they now only offer the lowest tariffs if you have one fitted is a disgrace whoever thought this up needs a good backside kicking, other countries have rejected this idea and there are real fears they could be hacked and millions left without power.

When I raised this I was told it was rubbish, couldn't happen and they were secure, really? tell that to all the worldwide so called secure sites that have been hacked and human error too,New Years honours address list anyone.

Hello Barry,

Thank you for your email and letting us know that you don't want to install a smart meter.

We have opted you out of Smart meter promotion

I've added an objection in your account about Smart meter and updated the marketing consent so that you don't receive any email related promotion. This objection stays for three months. If you change your mind in future, please let us know, we'll remove the objection for you. Y

Yours sincerely,

Yuman

So they'll start nagging me again in 3 months? Who gives them this right?  :-x

Given the massive resistance to smart meters which seems to be being totally ignored by the UK media/press for some reason, the persistence is puzzling.

In November it started with texts asking me to confirm an appointment, to which I replied, "No thanks".

Then I had another text saying they had not heard back so I phoned them and they said they had put me on the "refuseniks" list.

Next was a letter with lies:

"We need to change your meters"

"We have tried to contact you but have not heard back" I hate lies so E.ON might get reported to Ofgem.

The government have set themselves an impossible goal. If smart meters must be in 100% of homes, then they need to make them free and compulsory.

Whilst I have the option of saying "no", I will.

Hello Barry,

Thank you for your email and letting us know that you do not want a smart meter.

Smart meter is an government initiative

I'm sorry to hear that you don't want a smart meter. We really think that smart meters can benefit you, can I ask your reasons why you wouldn't like one? Smart meters are not compulsory now but if you get a smart meter installed, you can start benefiting from remote readings and accurate bills. Please let us know the reason why you don't want to install it so that we can updated it in our account.

You may keep receiving smart meter promotion which are triggered on automation, as it is an government initiative to have smart meter installed at every house hold by the end of 2020.

Yours sincerely,

Saranjit

Customer Service Team

Dear Saranjit,

I don't need remote readings as I am able to spare 5 minutes every 3 months to input the readings on the smart phone app.

I already have accurate bills because each time a bill is about to be generated I provide the readings.

I am very energy and costs aware as you will see from our energy usage which cannot realistically be reduced.

Smart meters are not properly transferable between energy providers and I change providers often.

Smart meters actually use electricity, which is an unnecessary increase in consumption.

They are my reasons.

Good morning and happy 2020.

Barry
