The DUP are a sinking ship, their not the only protestant party, but for now will remain the largest one, so will take the second ministerial role.  The DUP voted against Mays deal, which would have kept NI fully tied to their beloved UK. Then they voted for Johnson's deal which put a border between them and the rest of the UK. Does that make any sense to anyone ?

The only thing the DUP cares about is not being tied to Ireland, anything that moves them closer to this is evil and they would shoot their left foot off to stop it, which makes their decision to go against May even more bewildering. Their like the abused dog, kicked every day that continues to wag it's tail when master returns to give him another kicking.

As has been pointed out, the NI economy is doing well being part of the EU and UK, and it will only get better. They still use the pound (well a watered down version not allowed in GB), they still compete as UK sports people (oops no they don't, football, Olympics, rugby), even their Rugby players play for Ireland or Ulster (that's 9 and not the 7 counties in NI).

The truth is, the EU is not to blame, nor is Ireland. The only people to blame for this situation is the UK. It was their decision to brexit and their decision alone to follow the type of brexit they wanted, which is this on with a border in the Irish sea. The DUP can say what they want but the only people they can point a finger at is, master, the one that keeps kicking them.

Northern Ireland - The forgotten crisis

Almost unnoticed amid the multiple European cost of living and Downing Street crises, Northern Ireland is back in a political deadlock, with the resignation of the Democratic Unionist first minister in protest over the post-Brexit deal. However, official 2021 statistics show that the province has enjoyed its best economic performance, relative to the rest of the UK, for many years. Alex examines the issue with Jim Shannon, DUP MP for Strangford and Alasdair McDonnell, the former leader of the constitutional nationalist SDLP.

It is not all good here in Northern Ireland. The answer to this is the triggering of Article 16.' Arlene Foster discusses thousands of people gathering to protest the withdrawal agreement on Friday.

Tbh Thomas this is just a snapshot of what the brexit vote revealed.

Boris though better than mayhem has only ever been halfhearted regards brexit.

There is a consensus in both political Westminster and the civil service that brexit should never happened should be resisted in any way they can.

The reality is that consensus is almost universal across the three main players and not just brexit either the electorate are an annoyance that need to be patted patronised and made to believe they matter to them.......which they don't.

Like I said this issue an NI is just a snapshot, they don't give a toss what they think or want.
Not giving a toss about us cromwell , is a wee bit different to not giving a toss about northern ireland.

As i said to our friend gerry , how long can all this stumble on before violence starts rearing its ugly head again?

Brexit isnt the problem cromwell , its a symptom of the uk break down which started a century ago , and continues today.

Westmisnter it seems to me is simply can kicking hoping for a change in the wind further down the line , the english are determined to stay out the EU , scotland wants out the uk , and all in all we are all fighting like rats in a sack.

Tme we all went our seperate ways , until then , it will be non stop infighting and unrest. There wont be a moments peace.

...and i would say its now starting to boil over in northern ireland , and is only going to get worse as the year goes on.

Anti-protocol protests will get bigger and remain 'aggressive', says former First Minister Arlene Foster

Former First Minister Arlene Foster believes anti-protocol protests will become larger and remain "quite aggressive" if the British and Irish Governments, and the European Union continues to ignore unionist and loyalist concerns.

Speaking on GB News' Political Correction programme on Sunday, Arlene Foster said "upwards of 10,000 people" attended the rally despite the freezing weather conditions.
The former DUP leader said frustration over the protocol "was very tangible" as unionists and loyalists feel they are not being listened to.
"Neither Westminster, Dublin or indeed Europe seems to be taking any notice and that's why you see these protests becoming larger," stated Mrs Foster. "I have to say quite aggressive as well.
"Sammy Wilson, who is the Brexit spokesperson for the Democratic Unionist Party, attended and he has said the way Northern Ireland has been treated by the European Union is similar to the way in which Russia treats the Crimea. So in other words, annexation.
"Some people wont agree with that but I think what they do agree with is the fact there is no respect for the internal market of the United Kingdom, there's no respect for the fact that we are part of the United Kingdom and should therefore be treated as suc

It comes after Friday's latest protest in Markethill, Co Armagh, where DUP MP Sammy Wilson was booed and jeered by the crowd as he attempted to deliver a speech.
During his address, Mr Wilson compared the EU's handling of Northern Ireland in the Brexit process to Vladimir Putin's annexation of Crimea in Ukraine.

Customs checks have been placed at the Irish Sea rather than the legally recognised land border to prevent the "very real risk" of Republican attacks against land border customs posts. Belfast High Court had ruled land border customs posts didn't break the GFA. It is appeasement
