Given where we are now should we in any event continue as a nuclear power or rely on Russia or China being benign and no threat whatsoever?

No country in its right mind would protect a hostile foreign state from nuclear attack, which is why we should indeed allow Scotland to be undefended. Who the hell would want to invade it beats me though.

As for ourselves, I think we should focus on nuclear as a fuel rather than a weapon, and return to considering chemical in and biological weapons as our preferred defence, because Putin has form for happily using both.
