In contrast where I go on holiday in Brittany the small town of 6500 people plus the surrounding area has 40 firefighters plus 40 trainees.

They do carry our medical emergency and inshore rescue as well.

(Mostly volunteers not full time employed.)

An amount of kit and vehicles, that would be the envy of any British firefighter.

But all those people and kit are just "first responders" until the main full time firefighters arrive from  20 miles away.
