My experience is that any time gas is turned off a fitter comes to turn appliances off and on again. That could be a bit of a nightmare.

What the F@@@ are you on about. There won't be any gas in the lines to be cause any danger. Or do you think when the gas company shuts pipelines in order to repair them they are risking their own lives?

Of course gas can be rationed. You can shut off pipelines to areas not needed. If the government had to decide whether we have heating or power, they will make sure the gas plants are running whilst we all freezed.

Also a problem we have right now is people not understanding that we are currently buying Russian oil and gas and prices are still rising. What do you think will happen when we cut ourselves off from half the market? The UK is in a fortunate position in that it isn't as reliant as the continent to Russian Gas, but all strategies for continental Europe are years away and unlikely to work anyway. OPEC have made it clear to Europe that there is no substitute for Russian gas and as such everyone will be trying to buy the same stuff in low supply. So in that sense we are not immune to market forces and supply and demand just like Germany isn't. When Russian gas stops flowing, I will be surprised if anyone can affordto light up their homes and run their cars actually if power isn't shut down for a three day week and petrol stations don't run dry beforehand I should say.

We only buy around 3% of our gas from Russia so not reliant at all,that we and others allowed ourselves to be hostages to misfortune is what I called short termism.

You said I was wrong and what is now planned proves long term planning is in place,yes it is but the fact we are in the position we find ourselves in now rather proves my point that for decades we had little or none.

If only it was the simple. The UK could be buying no Russian gas, but we are as reliant on the free market just like everyone else is. If Europe stops buying Russian gas then they are buying the same supply as us. OPEC has said they cannot fill in the void so we will have a supply and demand issue. We both won't be able to buy the supply we need and be paying ten times more for that we do.

Can gas be rationed? I thought a certain mains pressure has be kept up for safety reasons. Maybe raising the gas price even more would be the only method of 'rationing'.

Oil based fuels can be rationed, of course, but again rising prices are effectively doing the job there too. Although oil and gas prices are artificially high at the moment because of Putin's war, their long term price trend can only be up and up as reserves become depleted.
