Ive nearly always been on the side of National ownership of anything we need  and private ownership of everything we want  . Giving away  control of our utilities was madness

Common sense seems rare in Westminster. We have often heard complaints about not storing during good times ready for later and it seems to be a running theme. At the time of privatisation I believe the hope was for better services if you remember Unions were creating havoc.  We do seem incapable in this country of doing anything superbly yet we are always running around spending willynilly. There is something basically inefficient and I would suggest Whitehall.
Good thinking Toots.

As you have said, we have problems storing gas in this country. Where do you want the government to build the new gasometers, in your front or back garden?

Maybe.....but only in part.

The selling off and squandering of public owned assets what Supermac called selling off the family silver.

Then we Brown selling the gold reserves off at rock bottom prices, all done as short term measures today look how well I've done with no thought whatsoever for the future.

Don't you think it was the vision of a united EU spreading before them like a nice warm security blanket that made them believe that all of Europe was equal with peace for ever? Didn't Russian leaders wear their sheep's clothing and smiles just as woolly after the 'end' of the cold war again promising 'peace in our time'? Didn't Reagan beam at us from across the pond and promise us eternal best friend status? It was a different world in so many ways. Everyone seemed to be mellowing - then Putin arrived still wearing his KGB uniform, at least in his head, the EU became something that wasn't in the plan and the USA went bonkers.

Let's hope it has taught everyone not just us, a lesson in self reliance no matter what contracts of 'friendship' we might make.

All those who still think Maggies sale of the utilities was a good idea,at the risk of boring people but it was more short termism and now the chickens have come home to roost.

Hostages to Russian energy and foreign owned utility companies, the lack of forward planning and investment that saw the mines shut, coal fired power stations closed but no long term plans to secure our energy needs.....but TBF that last part wasn't all down to Thatcher.
