If there's any doubt that with politicians their wallets and future employment prospects rate far higher than what is good for their country or people is illustrated here.

As I'm finding out now, Uber is massive in India. They have their own pickup zone at the airports, but I'm guessing it's not hard to find someone willing to take a bung here.
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

Apparently, a bottom feeder is a well-known saying in disc jockey circles.
It would also be a quite apt description of your typical Daily Mail journalist.
We are not all in the same boat. We are in the same storm. Some of us have yachts. Some of us have canoes. Some of us are drowning.

Just because I don't say anything, it doesn't mean I haven't noticed!

Returning this thread to sleaze and corruption in politics, I believe past Uber and government malpractices need to be investigated, and if found to be corrupt, should be punished.

Today's Uber is not the organisation it once was, but it should still be liable for law breaking in the past — as should any people (government or Uber) involved at the time.

Uber drivers are treated more fairly now, and customers, generally, get the service they pay for.

It would be a pity for drivers and other staff, and customers if Uber — or the current Uber model— was no longer allowed to operate...

On climate change — we're talking, we're beginning to act, but we're still not doing enough...

Sadiq Khan probably did the right thing in banning Uber in London 2017. I suppose even he gets something right occasionally.

That happened at reply number 2, not an on topic post since. Fred Drift is a real demon.

Religion is very much like Socialism in that respect. They both trace their doctrines back to long dead gurus and their acolytes and demand complete faith in the one true path.

Every now and again the two throw up new leaders, preachers, pseudo-messiahs, and non-orthodox renegade disrupters who operate for a while, then subside.

But somehow the system carries on, leaving a few corpses and wrecked lives along the way...
That is not actually true of socialism, which has many different shades and versions, most of them not wholly Marxist at all. Democratic socialists for example do not believe in revolution in the streets though we might support individual civil disobedience campaigns against wrongs or injustices, or strikes for better terms and conditions where these are poor. And we do not believe in any dictatorship of the proletariat or any of that guff. Nor do we believe that Marxist historical amd economic/political development is any kind of inevitable flow of history. On the contrary we believe that socialists gains need to be fought for democratically and then defended. Socialism is never inevitable.

Unlike religion which is largely an act of blind faith, most socialists are engaging their thhought processes and will adapt to circumstances, recognising that we need to persuade people to make socialist gains.

Your view of socialists is more akin to the Marxist-Leninist soviet type. Most of us on the left reject that as readily as you would reject Nazism or Fascism.

I suspect though your attempt to equate socialism with god-bothering was intended as a dig at my politics, because agreeing with my sentiments re Blair would have been a bit too uncontentious for you.

Of course, this risks derailing the thread into a discussion of the nature of various aspects of socialism. If that happens I would hope the mods would seperate it off

People in power or in positions of influence who think they have God on their side are often dangerous.

It was ever thus. I have always suspected that Blair's toadying to America  even against the national interests of the UK - borderline treason - was in part to ensure his popularity over there and thus guaranteeing his ability to make big bucks there after he left office.

The fact that this scumbag now has the ear of Starmer is sufficient alone to ensure I will not be voting Labour at the next general election.

I guess that leaves you without a vote then Steve? You're certainly not a Liberal, Green or Tory!!
I will vote for whomever the most progressive candidate is. That will not be Labour or Conservative. That could end up being Green, but it depends who is standing. Certainly I would rather vote than not vote, and would rather vote Green than Tory or Labour.
