It's not that this isn't a rational country any more.  It's that coronavirus has forced a new rationality on us. This has changed social, economic and, of course, medical priorities. which is how it has to be.

Sorry mate, don't mean to bring you down, but its not good is it?

You arent bringing me down at all deppity. Every single one of us is worried , and anyone who says otherwise is a liar. Im just trying to put a brave face on it.

The thing is its out of our hands now. I agree , i think # based on what little i know or have read , we are locked down to june now.

I think everyone of us is wondering if we will have jobs to go back to and how we go about picking up the pieces.

We are fine deppity. Apart from me and the boy locking ourselves in rooms to get away from the wife and daughter and get a bit of feckin piece and quiet , i havent murdered anyone yet.

Im just trying to take each day and each week at a time rather than trying to think too far ahead , but i dont disagree with what you have posted in the least.

I think you said among others from the start once this virus has run its course , the sting in the tail will be the economic fallout.

hope you and your family keep well , and dont lose the heid! ;)

Sorry mate, don't mean to bring you down, but its not good is it? The papers are full of it today, but it doesn't need a rocket scientist to work it out. Its now "lockdown until June", social distancing until October and "nothing will ever be the same again". What will it be next? Plague and pestilence? We aren't being governed by rational politicians anymore, we are being governed by contestants in a popularity contest, being advised by "experts" who one minute suggest half a million may die, then revise it to 20,000 the next. Everyone in a university has a "study" or a "model" to tell us about predicting everything from bubonic plague levels of death to the end of civilisation as we know it, Jim. The Police are urging us to sprag on our neighbours if they step outside the front door, and Boris thinks hes on reality tv, not in isolation in the flat above 10 Downing St. The figures don't add up, more people died yesterday than are even listed as being in critical condition? How the feck did that happen? At best we aren't being given any meaningful information, and at worst the press are filling in every space with rampant speculation, bullshit and plain lies. Fear sells, mate, and that's a fact.

The people "running" our country (and most of the Western world it now seems) have lost the plot. How many noughts they put after any particular forecast or amount of money has lost all meaning now. Just make any old figure up. 1.3 zillion. That will do. Talking about shutting down society for months on end, evermore draconian measures of lockdown, ratting on neighbours, following dog walkers with fecking drones, this isn't a rational country anymore. Meanwhile, various social commentators believe we'll come out of this as "better people". They forgot to add that vary many of us might also come out of it jobless and facing eviction too. How many will die from suicide, drink and substance abuse, lack of care or social services, poor health and housing conditions that deep recessions always bring on? No one wants to think about that now, because its not scary "news" yet.

I really am sorry, I don't know the answer anymore than you do, but I do know this farce isn't it. The "cure" is going to do greater damage than the disease ever will.

The bad news is that some sort of recession appears to be on the cards. Not because of this Covid 19 bug, but because the Chinese economy has been slowing down for the last two years. The good news is that it is not so much slowing down as not expanding as fast before. So I reckon we are looking at a soft landing rather than a crash. And as usual it will be the kids who will bear the brunt of it. Generally speaking it is cheaper to sack them than the older workers or not take them on at all.

Economists always remind me of the lady who stands in my local High street screaming that we are all doomed to spend eternity burning in the fires of hell. She is fun to listen to, but like economists, not to be taken seriously.

Hope everythings ok with you, Jock, but I have to say my confidence in the future and in our government is rapidly disappearing. CEBR is now forecasting a certain recession with Global GDP to decline TWICE as much as in 2008/09. If the stimulus actions now being undertaken by world central banks fail (except to put us all trillions more in debt anyway) to have the desired effects, we are looking at a potential 1930s style depression which hardly anyone still alive will ever have experienced.

I am still getting on with it because I'm still at work. First day off today in 10, back in again tomorrow. I just hope for everyones sake that when this is all over and you're all allowed to go back to work, there is still something to go back to. For very many, there won't be.

Good post deppity we finished monday , and im now in feck it mode to be honest.

Jist try and keep smiling , what can you do?

I have had one of my female cousins in paisley on facebook posting nothing but utter total fake news all feckn week , talk about drama  queens bless her. This is also what we have been talking about for a while now about people relishing and overdoing the bad news.

Couple of examples the poor auld burd posted a picture of a warehouse in madrid with someone telling her its the SECC in glesga getting prepared for all the dead bodies and those ready to die.

I politely pointed out i had saw the same picture last weekend in the FT website , and it wasnt the secc in glasgow .

Then the next day she is copying and sharing some drama queen talking about how all italian doctors and nurses have been killed by coronavirus.

I didnt bother even commenting.

Thats the sort of hysteria out there at the minute , the deliberate by political activists , drama queens and attention seekers backed up by the not so bright.

All we can do is knuckle down and get through it.

And yeah her death is listed as heart attack, quite happy to be proved wrong.

I think we can all agree Mr C that this isn't about being right or wrong, it's about understanding this virus. As tragic as Chloe's death is, the fact that we now know a young perfectly healthy person hasn't died from Covid-19 is a welcome.
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

Until she has had a post mortem it doesn't, she may have an unknown pre-existing health issue.

South Korea tested a lot more than anyone else seems to have done an really clamped down on the people moving about.

South Korea keeps tabs on people's whereabouts and movements by tracking the population's cellphone and card usage. People there seem to accept that this is for their own good. I doubt the UK population would take the same attitude...

The one country outside China that does seem to have controlled the spread is South Korea.  What are the lessons from there and is it too late to apply them elsewhere?

One story that is repeated in almost every country is that their governments didn't learn the lesson from China.  Whether it's Italy, Spain, France, UK itself and now the USA, it could be argued that the governments shut the stable door after the horse had bolted.

China has finally brought its outbreak under control with no 'roadmap' from previous experience.

The one country outside China that does seem to have controlled the spread is South Korea.  What are the lessons from there and is it too late to apply them elsewhere?  Was South Korea just lucky (in relative terms, of course) because they were able to trace the source of the outbreak and quarantine all those who attended?

Breaking News Sky, Boris Johnson has tested positive for Covid 19

Of course he has.  Most people have or will or did have it.
Those princes who have done great things have held good faith of little account, and have known how to craftily circumvent the intellect of men.  Niccolò Machiavelli.
