The problem at the moment is that while we're free to travel and mix in large groups, not to mention being required to turn up for work etc. there's strong social pressure for all of us to continue mixing freely, even if it's against out better judgement.

That's why we need the government to bring in stringent restrictions, so that people no longer feel obliged to mix freely and risk spreading coronavirus.

Ireland has just brought in restrictions while Angela Merkel has warned that up to 70% of Germany's population could eventually get the virus.  Only a fraction of a percent of China's population caught the virus and the epidemic there is in sharp decline, her statement sounds incredibly defeatist given that the way to stop the spread is staring her in the face.  Germany's government seems to be as far behind the curve as the UK on this one.

Attitudes to coronavirus are dividing people across the traditional tribes - a bit like Brexit did.

I've come across right-wing people talking about going into in 'survivalist' mode and people who some might describe as 'snowflakes' who are saying they're not going to change any of their plans.  People need to know that with this illness, when they put themselves at risk they will be putting their nearest and dearest at risk too.

 :hattip  Too right.

On a serious note though, it's utterly depressing to watch the world committing financial suicide over this. It will now take years to recover

My daughter just mentioned a British chap in Italian who was interviewed this morning. The comment that resonated with her was that if you are fit and healthy and get the right treatment you might recover.

So fit and healthy and presumably ventilation. So when thousands are ill and needing oxygen for day/weeks and they simply don't have it..........

When so many are diagnosed/isolated I should think making money for the national economy will be the last thing that's thought about or possible. The financial suicide is not by choice.

Well the only perspective I see is that there are people who say this is a panic about nowt,of course the Italians are famous for blind panic aren't they (sarcasm btw) and trump has restricted travel from schengen area but he's an idiot (more sarcasm) https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-51846923">//https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-51846923

I think every country is different with how they look at threat. You have to remember that most Americans are unaware of world news and not even certain that there is not a cliff edge beyond their shores. Italians cannot help their hot blood and most Italian men would give up life rather than kissing etc.

We have too the macho fellas who think that this will be easy, and to be honest the Government are playing it cool just to avoid panicking the plebs. I have had pretty frank discussions with my kids about how we might mentally prepare for whatever happens. It does seem a little naive to deny what is right in front of us and knowing how ill prepared the NHS etc is.

Has anyone seen anything from the private health sector? I wonder if the government is looking to involve their hospitals etc. I guess they must be - hence the 30 billion.

That is probably why there is an epidemic of Sexually Transmitted Infections amongst the elderly.

I guess that's one to worry about after the coronavirus pandemic has finished.

if you come into contact with a random person.  Lots of random people coming into contact with other random people and the risk becomes much greater.

Unless someone coughs in your direction the air outside is not contaminated with Covid-19. It is physical contact or contaminated surfaces that are the danger.

(However the recirculated air inside pressurised air-craft cabins is a danger.)

I know - I said that as far as we know covid-19 is not carried in the general atmosphere.  I was comparing instances where lockdown might be introduced.  After an industrial accident, even if it's only slightly dangerous to go outside because the air is contaminated, people are told to stay in as a precaution.  With covid-19 there's no danger in simply going outside but there is a tiny, even infinitesimal, risk if you come into contact with a random person.  Lots of random people coming into contact with other random people and the risk becomes much greater.

In the event of a radiation leak, anyone who goes against the advice and goes out into the contaminated air only really risks harming themselves. That's not the same with covid-19

Now is the time for Boris Johnson to show some real leadership of the country for the benefit of all its people.

Given that he took us out of the EU for no good reason, surely he should now put the country into lockdown, a policy that is now showing clear benefits in China and South Korea and which is now in force in Italy as it desperately tries get the spread of coronavirus under control.

One British person living in Italy who is now confined to their home was interviewed on BBC said he'd calculated that the UK is about 13 days behind Italy in the spread of coronavirus.

From time to time we get industrial accidents that result in leaks of hazardous gases.  When that happens people are told to stay indoors and keep windows shut.  If there was a radiation leak from a nuclear power station there would be no hesitation in bringing in lockdown in the at-risk area (unless, of course, the authorities try to hush up the leak!).  Although covid-19 isn't thought to be airborne in the sense that it survives in the general atmosphere (keeping windows shut would usually be a needless precaution) the need to minimise person-to-person contact is obvious.  In the event of a radiation leak, anyone who goes against the advice and goes out into the contaminated air only really risks harming themselves. That's not the same with covid-19

It's the potential numbers that we are preparing for, but besides that it is the equipment and staffing over weeks of treatment that is required for very large numbers requiring it all at once that is causing the concern. In Italy doctors are calling for over 60s not to be treated in favour of younger patients who might live longer. It is true some hardly notice the infection but too many others are getting pneumonia and need life support and oxygen for extended periods of time to allow them to heal badly damaged lungs. The death rate will increase as/when more patients cannot be given sufficient treatment.

Blimey! You deal with one Covid-19 thread, only to turn around and see another 5 or 6 have broken out in the meantime!

At least they are currently all contained in one sub forum. Hopefully this quarantine will hold them and we wont see them running out of control through all the other forum areas.....

You do play fast and furious with your precious spondooliks!

I reckon 1% of 50% of 45 million, 225,000.

With strict government quarantines and isolations. maybe 22,500, the average age will be 70 ish.

I'd like to give the 200 quid to https://www.hopeforpodencos.com/">//https://www.hopeforpodencos.com/. Muchas gracias, hombre.  :)

To be honest Barry, I am not taken by any organisation that makes a point of cutting a dog's balls off but a deal is a deal. Shall we make the deadline 11 December 2020? Tramps tend to start disappearing into shelters for the Christmas and they can be surprisingly hard to find in the second half of December.
