There is a local emergency services worker with all the symptoms rang 111,Q have you been to Italy or China? no you're OK then. :fcplm:

Our response to this IMO is woeful.

It's that sort of attitude and response which will result in chaos. We are 13 days behind Italy, so we can expect drastic measures her by about 21st March.

France and Germany are only 9 days behind Italy, so expect them to be locked down a few days before.

Wouldn't it have been better to have ordered the closure of all schools and nurseries yesterday? This is a risk assessment game, it didn't go well for Italy. Why our government thinks we can deal with it better, escapes me.

Again you are missing the point. It is a numbers game. It's not how many will die, it's how many will die without respiratory care. It is how many can we put on oxygen to give them time to heal their lung infection.  After 60  some say 40, very many people have some sort of debility even if they don't know or have no diagnosis. It's wear and tear. It's only later in life that it becomes medically evident. The NHS is currently buying ventilators and they admitted in the Commons yesterday that they had no idea how many they would need. They simply said 'more'. The notion of those who will suffer little being the norm is not what they are worried about. It is having enough facility to treat those who won't just bounce through it. This will include kids with asthma, smokers, as well as the older population.

Fair enough Toots. I agree that we should take the traditional approach and treat the women and children and  Hyperduck Quack Quack first and tell the menfolk to put their shoulders back and act like, you know, men.

I admit I have an interest in this. Common sense suggests that this bug is spread by crowds, so I intend to spend the rest of March in purdah, on my allotment and doing what I usually do there which is not much of anything while listening to Classic FM

Absolute nonsense, did you look at this? https://ibb.co/6DKdq0q">https://ibb.co/6DKdq0q

I didn't make this graph up, it was on the Jeremy Vine show hence the crappy photo. You can barely separate it from the common cold and it's mortality rate is on a par with Flu.

I expect this reaction from Ducky but the rest of you are being hoodwinked like project fear during Brexit.

John Hopkins University. A bit of perspective or are you guys all coffin dodgers with dodgy tickers 😂. I'm only 52 BTW.

Seems a lot are in denial. "It's just flu". Well, last time I looked, I didn't see a European country of 60 million locking itself down for "It's just flu".

It seems that people are dividing into two groups on this issue - those who make light of the situation and say things like "so what, thousands of people die of flu each winter" and others who are terrified out of their wits.  COVID19 kills at least 20 times the proportion of patients to normal flu, so there is a lot more to fear.

The government should be putting this country into lockdown now.  The lessons from China and Italy are clear even to a non-expert.  The longer you leave it, the worse the situation will get.  If we go into lockdown now, it might only need to last 2 or 3 weeks.  If it's left for 2 weeks it might last months.

Why lockdown?  We all have work and social commitments.  We don't want to let people down or be thought by some to be a paranoid whimp, so we will probably go to gatherings against out better judgement.  If the government imposes lockdown, that takes away dilemma.

Another thing - a lot of businesses are going to suffer, lockdown or not.  The government should pass emergency legislation to allow a failing business to  put itself in a kind of 'deep freeze' insolvency, so that it can't actually be liquidated until after the emergency is over.

You're kidding. Is that true or just 'Chinese whispers'?

well I suppose the person could've made it up and working in the emergency services doesn't make you a saint but I have no reason to disbelieve, people on 111 work to a Q/A script afaik.

Sorry Barry but I think it's the world gone mad.

I think you might be missing the point. It's not that everyone will be massively ill, it's the couple of million or more who have other conditions who will need hospital care and facilities that don't exist in sufficient numbers. If we - I count myself as one - all rock up at once the NHS will cave. They are trying to shift it so that it spreads out and doesn't overload any systems. Every country with this is experiencing the same problems. You and yours may well be fine just don't give it to anyone else. Equally everyone sick at once will put an end to many services that we all need. You may well be rough for a couple of days and feel fine, but you will still be infectious so at least a week off work or whatever. Multiply that by millions and perhaps you might imagine the odd problem.

I survived measles  mumps, smallpox (yes, really)

I survived a ten litre solution of cow sh*t bacteria giving me a shower after a ten floor drop down a stairwell giving me the shits and a weight loss from ten stone to eight and a half stone

I've survived atrial fibrillation and two blue and two trips by ambulance, and an absolute shitload more.

If some god damned chinky biological weapon thinks it's going to take me down its got another goddamn think coming. Us Vikings were perfecting the art of war long before them.

Bring it on.

Bloody right  :D  :D

And run an engine room with a wheel key.

And never mind a few loads of Chinee snot, I have had the sods shooting at me. And if ever I turn down the chance of snogging some little mademoiselle then I probably have died of this Chink cough.
