No leader can do anything fundamental and meaningful until they get into power with enough support to form an active administration.

2024** is not that far away and gives little time for any new leader to build up an image and personality strong enough to carry a party into government. That applies to both Conservative and Labour — LibDems have to wait for the campaigning to start as they have nobody of real note right now...

** Wonder if the new PM might think they have got enough coverage over the leadership campaign to go for an election earlier, before Starmer can build up a head of steam...

I doubt that either Sunak or Truss will go for an early election. They have both misjudged the electorate (or at least the party membership) over Boris and will have to spend some time waiting for the memories of their past betrayals to fade and future tax cuts to hit the public pocket. So I doubt that there will be a general election before 2024

And anyone who trusts Starmer on anything he has to say about Brexit is a fool. The man has a proven track record of telling those whose votes he wants what they want to hear just to get elected, then ignoring all that and doing what he really wants when he gets in.

So the pertinent question is not what Starmer says. His words are cheap. But what does Starmer want. Because what he says and what he wants might not be the same thing.

On climate change — we're talking, we're beginning to act, but we're still not doing enough...

So you reckon that Starmer is a politician Steve?

Hard words, but you might be onto something.:)

According to these guys...

https://www.politico.eu/europe-poll-of-polls/united-kingdom/....

The gap between the Tories and Labour has narrowed to 5%. The Truss and Sunak are offering tax bungs and Starmer is waving the Union Jack.

I once heard Harold Wilson speak. He was standing on the back of a lorry on the Northcote Road in Battersea, puffing on his pipe and so hammy he could have been slapped between two rounds of bread and turned into a sarnie. Then someone screamed Rubbish ! and Harold said thank you lad, I will come back to your subject later.

Now that Boris is out of the race I don't suppose the hustlings will be as much fun as that, but they do appear to be getting a little arse numbingly dull.:)

We are not all in the same boat. We are in the same storm. Some of us have yachts. Some of us have canoes. Some of us are drowning.
