A short thought experiment by Derek Parfit.

You wake up in a hospital bed, bedside another person. You have no memory of how you got there, nor does the other person.

The nurse walks in and explains you were both in an accident, and that one of you was in an extremely painful surgery for 4 hours yesterday, after which the memory of the surgery was wiped, and that the other person would be having 2 hours of extremely painful surgery tomorrow, after which their memory of the surgery will be wiped.

The nurse leaves the room to confirm which patient had the surgery yesterday, and which would be having it tomorrow.

Which would you rather be?

You might as well asked would you rather of had surgery or have surgery. Like most things, wouldn't everyone rather get it out the way?
