Quote from: Streetwalker on October 01, 2024, 07:04:44 AMJohnson was bluff and double bluff and he was quite good at it in that he got people to believe what he was saying . You never quite knew if he was serious or joking which gave him scope to joke when he was serious and lie when nobody laughed
But of course he was never going to invade the Netherlands any more than he was going to leave the EU without a deal , some people will believe anything  ;)
I never thought even he was ever going to be that stupid, so I agree hat he was never going to invade the Netherlands, which is why I have kept saying that this is all bullshit.

Quote from: srb7677 on October 01, 2024, 12:43:58 AMIf that is what he actually thought he is an even bigger fool than I thought he was. A military invasion with all the negative consequences for us including sanctions and pariah status would have caused us irreparable harm, might well have failed anyway and if so would have resulted in us never getting our hands on the vaccines.

If you think the solution to other countries having things we need is to invade them military and seize them by force you inhabit a different moral universe to me. I am surprised that someone like you is defending this gung ho nonsense. It's the sort of guff I'd expect from hard right Brexiteer nutjobs.

I think this is all absolute shite to be honest, designed to sell copies, increase his net value to the media and that's about it. Because certain readerships - notably that of the Daly Mail who carried the story - lap up this kind of crap.

Most of us just now think he is an even bigger buffoon than we already knew him to be. And a proven liar let's not forget

No, all those things are me

Not Boris Johnson

He isn't perfect, no human is, but he did the best he could to save the country during a pandemic. He has a good sense of humour so he may just be injecting some funny stuff into his book too, in which case he definitely shouldn't be harshly judged for it

There's nothing wrong with Brexiters, they are patriots, just like far-leftists care about their country and want to implement socialism

Neither are in the wrong

It is just the sort of nonsense someone might have come up with after a few too many bevvies.

Maybe he was just doing what he thought was best to try and help people. He was doing as best he could with the knowledge he had at the time

Talking of Jeremy Clarkson, I have always thought that he would have been hilarious as Transport Minister.Imagine his Commons interventions....

Is the right honourable member for Brighton Pavilions entirely unaware that she is talking complete and utter crud?"

"How can the right honourable member for such and such justify such food expenses? Had I paid so much for a lobster I'd have expected it to get up off my plate and perform a song and dance routine before being eaten."

"Is the former Prime Minister aware of the great good he did for motorists, by demonstrating in his own person how stupid you could look on a bicycle?"

It would certainly have been amusing.

With Bojo anything is possible. I suspect the military officers laughed but not to his face.

Well something like that would be wouldn't it. It sells copies. Doesnt mean  that a story written by a self serving liar in a rag renowned for it's own lack of honesty is actually likely to be true.

If it is true the mainstream media will run with it. I would be staggered to discover that this was actually seriously being considered. Because I struggle to believe that even Johnson and those around him would ever have been so stupid, and am pretty sure that it would have been leaked by concerned civil servants or political colleagues if it were.

I definitely smell bullshit here.

I saw that headline on the front of the Daily Mail yesterday, which inevitably brings into question severe doubts about the integrity of such a farcical story.

I very much doubt even Johnson would have ever been that stupid. I seriously doubt that such a plan was ever seriously discussed, except perhaps after too many bevvies at one of his Downing Street parties.

This story has bollocks pandering to a readership known to like such bollocks all over it.

Let's break down what such an invasion would have entailed. Armed aggression against a European neighbour which was also a member of a much larger bloc. There would likely have been armed resistance with British and Dutch forces shooting at each other. With casualties. Trump might have been stupid enough to approve but no one else would. The likely reaction would have been the break up of NATO resulting from member states shooting at each other. And the EU would likely have shut down all trade between us and them which would have been economically disastrous. And our standing on the world stage would have collapsed. And the operation might not have even succeeded anyway being obviously high risk.

Since I struggle to believe that even a Tory government could be so stupid, I see another example of the Mail producing utter tripe Because the alternative - that it is actually true - would be damning and worrying in the extreme.
