I went ont to mention my point which was if the uk government had acted much earlier , it could have followed the WHO guidance and started locking down and testing /contact tracing and we might very well be in a better place than where we are.

 Firstly, these tests that "do actually work" may not actually work.  This is based on experts who are questioning those methods.
