This is a long and detailed article about current thinking on how Covid-19 impacts on patients, especially those who become seriously ill.  It seems that it's not fully understood or proven yet all of the different ways in which Covid-19 causes people to become very seriously ill and sometimes die.  What's clear though is that a minority of people, some of whom don't have underlying conditions, become very seriously ill and will most certainly die if not hospitalised.

A good article, although it's way too long to finish.  But, this part is what I have also heard, and is very important:

"Some clinicians suspect the driving force in many gravely ill patients' downhill trajectories is a disastrous overreaction of the immune system known as a "cytokine storm," which other viral infections are known to trigger. Cytokines are chemical signaling molecules that guide a healthy immune response; but in a cytokine storm, levels of certain cytokines soar far beyond what's needed, and immune cells start to attack healthy tissues."

This is what I mean when I say CV19 is a trigger, but your immune system is the killer.  The critical question is: why are some immune systems doing this, and not others?    And that, in my opinion, comes down to a faulty system.
