Whatever is in the report, must be even more damaging to the government than the damage of refusing to release it, so it must be pretty bad I suppose.

The most obvious motivation is that it casts further doubt over the validity of the result of the 2016 referendum on which the Conservative party have pinned their political future.

What is the general feeling?

Number 10 has blocked the publication of the intelligence and security committee report on Russian interference in the 2016 referendum until after the election.



Number 10 has claimed this is a procedural delay as it takes 6 weeks to sign off such a document (checking redactions etc).



The chair of the committee has gone on record saying this is a lie. That the redactions etc have already been cleared with the security services and cabinet office and the sign off procedure takes a maximum of 10 days (the report was deliver to No10 on the 17th October).



So there are a couple of possibilities.



A) the chair of the committee is lying and it does indeed take 6 weeks to sign such a document off



B) No10 is lying and deliberately supressing the report for some reason.



Given No10 has a demonstrably distant relationship with the truth these days, my money is on B).



I suspect there is something rather embarrassing in that report for No10. Of it was otherwise I imagine they would be keen to release it as it would give an excellent shield against claims of impropriety by senior government figures during the 2016 ref.
