That's an incredibly perceptive and shrewd observation, DD  :dncg:

Iran has said there'll be a response and it wouldn't be totally surprising if that occurs.  But there's more.  Iran has a powerful ally, Russia.

The figure I found was Iraq's army is 54,000 and air force 5000 = 59,000 rounded up to 60,000.  There's probably navy too so who are the other 100,000 -  another army or national paramilitary police or what?

Media and internet "assessments" of military strength mean little. You can give a 1000 men guns, but it doesn't make them soldiers. Without the high quality officers, training facilities and practical military culture based on years of actual experience, numbers mean very little. Few of these so called "powers" outside the established western militaries, plus Russia, China, Israel and a few others, have the basic capabilities to deploy properly supported all arms formations at anything approaching a full brigade anywhere but on their own streets.

Roughly, for each combat soldier in the fighting formations, another 2 or 3 are required to provide artillery and fire support, combat and mechanical engineering, logistics and transport, medical, intelligence, to name just a few. They all then need supplying, over potentially vast distances, and potentially at threat of interdiction by the enemy. North Korea or Iran might "say" they have a million men, but the ability of either nation to deploy them outside (and in some case even inside) their own borders is extremely limited.

Now Iraq's parliament has voted to expel US and other foreign troops. I haven't begun to work out what this might lead to. Iraq has about 60,000 military - mostly army, helped and trained and armed by the US.  The US has about 6000 military in Iraq.

Well that has clearly nailed their colours to the mast. They have chosen Iran over the USA. I suppose the events of the 1980s are all forgiven now.

If the USA withdraw from Iraq, which they must, Iran will effectively annex Iraq and become very powerful.

This assumes they can keep their own revolution under control. Interesting times.

Iraq has 165 000 military personnel , not 60 000.

Iran has nearly a million active military personnel. To put that into context the uk has less than either.

Despite this , i dont think either nation is a match for the usa do you?

The worry is who is going to get in on the act and take sides with who and how it escalates.

Like I said, your prejudices are hanging out, Baron, as usual. I've never seen a post so full of bigotry and xenophobic nonsense. It's a new low, even for you.

Melanie Phillips is a British woman, a Jew, and has a perfect right to commentate on world events, especially the Islamist threat from Iran as she has studied their motives and tactics for many years.

Oh well I do like to add a bit of humour to my posts sometimes. I guess you forgot what that was. Now you are just reeling off standard defences to accusations I never made.

Anyway, please do follow up my hypothesis yourself. Get into the habit, like I do, that when we bring up a Journalist's name, do a  quick bio check. it only takes a couple of minutes, and see if you detect any patterns. I was trained as a scientist and trained to look for patterns in observational data in order to infer laws and general mechanisms. Rather than scoff at the skill, try practising it yourself.

Trump is now threatening to strike 52 sites in Iran if there's any retaliation for the US assassination, so there's an indication that the US is ready to escalate the conflict which it started the other day.

Let's take it as read that Iran has a repressive government with an appalling human rights record, OK.

So the question here is the real motive for Trump deciding to carry out an attack now, particularly when he himself said it should have been done years ago and he's been president for 3 years.  My belief is that he's a warmonger and this act is good for his playground bully ego.  He's itching for a war with someone and the lead-up to a presidential election is an opportune time for him to have one, so he can play the patriotism card during his campaign.

Hasnt the USA got a problem with too much oil swilling around ? Pump prices have risen by 2p/l alreadyband doubtless will rise by more tomorrow....

Observations, not prejudices. It goes to show all of these papers and the BBC are in it together. It does not matter whether you are a Daily Mail reader or a Guardian reader. You will still be fed the same stuff.

If we trace many of our politicians and media pundit's families, there are many with parents from the Eastern Bloc. Why do you suppose the British prefer to be run by foreigners? I suspect they don't really give a sh*t and are in it for themselves. They are detached from normal people. They are nearly always educated at Oxford. They nearly always hold socialist views, except this one, who is most likely a socialist as well, but playing the position of the other side so it looks like a debate, especially as they name it as a debate, as per "we need to have a debate on this".
