The issue in Hungary is the govt trying to control the courts. Both the polish and Hungarian people are in favour of EU membership, it's their govt that has their days numbered.

The very reason that National leaders oppose EU laws ,directives and promote their  own agendas is because the people of these countries have a say where those leaders are taking them .
If saying yes to the EU at every turn kept you in 'power' then they would do it .
But I agree that it's the people that shape the govt, and generally get what they deserve.

Poland alone received about 13b Net in 2020, Hungary about 4b, and they will get similar numbers every year until such time as they become contributors. At this moment in time they receive a lot.

According to Wikipedia, in 2019 a majority of Polish men under 40 believe that "the LGBT movement and gender ideology" is the "biggest threat facing them in the 21st century, so it looks as though their is a bit of sales resistance to overcome.

It should also be pointed out that the combined population of Poland and Hungary is 50 million, so 100 Euros works out at about £1.80 a head, which isn't the price of a cup of coffee so the EU's threats aren't very threatening.

Judges at the European Court of Justice ruled that Brussels could withhold funds to member states seen to be violating the law on judicial independence, migrant quotas and LGBT rights.

This is great news, if you want to be in a club that values equality and the rule of law, then you must abide by the rules, in this case of your own countries rules. Trying to undemocratically control the court system shouldn't be supported. These countries that want to continue on this path can always leave the EU, like the UK did.
