I guess he was becoming just too popular, and therefore a threat to the current PM.

If both Johnson and Sunak can see this through without much more mud being thrown (and sticking), their positions might simply revert to PM and Chancellor (with a give-away budget) running up to the next election.

On the other hand, Sunak might return to the back benches doing notable good works for a year or so and sit tight waiting for the call to serve should Johnson be ousted — though that's always assuming he really wants the PM's job, and depending on what his ambitions really are...
