Leaving out the  :brd:  detail  could leave some pretty empty replies.

No, just shorter replies.

It's a tricky one, because some reading a post need it spoon-feeding or they complain like mad, and others will not read a long post. I try and cut a path through the middle. I also do try and write my posts using terms that people can Google so they can get an explanation of that particular thing.

How boring would that be ?  Surely its the talking bs (and being called out on it ) and having all our weird and wonderful take on things that make any forum a success .

If I want a definitive answer I'll goggle it  .

Yes but that only works if it is a question that you can just look up. With the chap from Boeing, his sparing partner could not look stuff up because you see the accident investigators were still on the job, so he could not just rely on the stuff the web was telling him. He had to figure it out. I love those kind of arguments, because you are as good as what you know. The kind I don't like is if you find you are not just arguing with some bloke, but say a bloke and an official report from some ministry which works like those old soviet telephones (they only worked one way and were for giving orders!).

Another thing is that if we know what others know, then perhaps if two have expertise in the same thing they can leave out the boring detail since when talking to someone it is bad form to teach them to suck eggs.

You mean an expert witness. Well there are a few experts there, but many are to do with medicine or the ballistics of bullets or similar.

The thing is that if we actually had some experts on forums we might accept answers of the kind "because I say it is" more readily. Then again sometimes you don't need to because if you know what you are talking about then you will know if they are making it up or not. That's how I spotted this man from Boeing, because as he went into control system theory I was like tick, tick, tick, tick... in my head, seeing everything is bang on correct, and you then realise so and so could not make this stuff up. A fake expert is easy to spot because they will never get to the particulars, like describe something in exact terms, but use vague words, so they can wriggle out of what they have said which is confused nonsense.

I feel that expertise is a valuable forum commodity. With enough experts in things there will be someone who can give a definitive answer on anything.

Actually I do. They are the go to specialist in a large legal practice.

All I know is that I know nothing.

Which is a pretty good line except when Herself wants me to get off my arse and do something.

Something I did not realise until yesterday was how dangerous Christmas trees are. I found half a dozen of them in the street and thought ahha, buckshee and free for nothing wood ash. So I hauled them off to my allotment, applied a match and bloody near burned the shed down.

It is an odd thing, but when I was a lad everybody had a Christmas tree and everyone spent Christmas half cut and with a fag in their hands because smoking was compulsory in those days. But I never heard of any fires.

Ah well you're as old as me if not older but I remember as a a youngster the tree went up on Christmas Eve and you didn't have Christmas lights .......well you did fancy holders that held fancy little candles that were lit for a short time on Christmas Eve and Day,we eventually got electric lights that were massive compared to modern ones but were still going when I got married and left home.

Blood elf and safety would have a fit nowadays.
