There was piece on the beeb t'other day iirc saying there's never been fires like this in Australias history, and I thought yeah but it's only got a history of just over 200 years, not demeaning the aborigines who I reckon have a far better understanding of the place than the new arrivals, and then there's a post by jog on the science thread looking at much longer periods.

I don't doubt there are things happening but its the bollocks that this has never happened before.

Interesting Lancet article on the subject of arson and arsonists:-

Arson assessment and treatment: the need for an evidence-based approach

In 2018, across England and Wales alone, 770 individuals were sentenced for arson, of which 47% received a custodial sentence or hospital order.1 Despite the number of individuals convicted of arson offences each year, this criminal behaviour remains poorly understood. For example, a paucity of evidence exists regarding risk factors for reoffending. Consequently, few specialist assessment and intervention frameworks are available to assess and treat this highly destructive behaviour.

Although there has been some disinformation, this seems to be true:

The NSW police said that while 24 people were charged with deliberately lighting bushfires, 53 faced legal actions — which include a warning — for not complying with a statewide ban on fires. And the overall number also includes 47 people who were accused of not properly disposing of lit cigarettes or matches.

So back to the bushfires the Australian Royal Navy have become the toast of the town and delivered 800 gallons of beer to the fire ravaged town of Mallacoota . Good to see they still have their priorities right .

The story caught my eye not just because of the beer run but the name of the town . As a kid I studied the voyages of Captain Cook ,Mallacoota or rather its costal rocks  Hicks Point was where Cook first sighted land .  Its a small world .

Cheers !

Being a be prepared sort of person, I have a fully charged screwdriver to hand, plus a fully charged power pack to recharge other devices.

(Mind you with the number of targets locally that would be hit with a nuclear attack, it would be better just to stand outside and get vapourised.

However looking back the was it 2 minute warning we were supposed to be getting probably wasn't enough to find the screwdriver let alone take half a dozen doors off the hinges .  .I guess we would have been toast ,well done toast at that .

I don't think they would understand it . It wasn't that we were going to survive but that we would be dammed if we were not going to try . And besides making camps in the house as we did practice runs was fun .
