So to the important questions:

Do they still have those 1950s Chevvies running on Lada engines and with fairy liquid for brake fluid?

is it true (as one of my friends says) that the Cuban dish 'Flan' is amazing?
They have all of them, but they still have the V8 7.4L engines in them. There is also a load of Lada's also. Apparently there is a Cuban who set up a company in the US shipping spare parts back home. A 1957 Chevi Bel-Air will cost you $50,000, a knackered old Lada is over $30K.

As for medicines, nobody can get them, people queue for 7 hours, waiting for stuff to come in. 3 day queues for fuel, people sleep in their cars.

I would love to know what you think is propaganda Smurf?

People want to be able to dream, they can't do that with a ration book!!
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

It was a figure of speech....

I did wonder because as far as I am aware Metformin is amongst the top 10 medications used in Cuba. (That does not mean it would be easily available for tourists though.)

John where did you get the information about metformin in Cuba please.
It was a figure of speech....

Meaning the dosage i would need to overcome the effect on my ankles of all that sugar would probably kill me before tbe sugar did. The LD50 and all that, there are research papers in the yank NIH pubmed database suggesting the drug severely impacts the mitochondria at high doses, incurring lethargy

but there WAS a problem in 2018 though. A project manager i worked with came back from a fortnight out there saying he messed up calculating the pills he should have taken and had a god awful time finding supplies. No idea why.

It does do me, but the diabetes nurse would not be impressed.
I remember the 'made while you wait' breakfast bar at the Riu Tequila, Cancun a few years back. A friend told me i had to try a particular dish which turned out tove a somewhat spicy omelette with all sorts in it.

An American woman picking up what appeared to me to be pancakes with special ice cold sugar syrup at the point of crystallisation saw this and said utterly aghast as it was handed to me 'am i not going to put sny sugar sorinkles on that, it eont taste of anything without them'

i just looked at her unsure i'd heard what i'd just heard. "That would be like having chips - sorry, FRIES - with chocolate sauce" i said. "I want it the way my friend said i should try it"....

Other than the 1950s Chevvies the rest is propaganda.  As for Cuban Flan I suspect it is dangerously bad for your health. Eggs, a can of sweetened condensed milk, and a can of evaporated milk. You'll also need a generous amount of cane sugar, some water, whole milk, cinnamon, salt, and vanilla extract.

I'm now into my fifth day here and what is clear is that there is a Capitalist sub system running beneath the socialist one. Shock horror!! All you limp wristed socialist tree huggers will now have to evaluate your values, cause I've heard it from the people on the ground that it doesn't work.

Imagine the scenario: me, a (Junior DR: will get her results next week), her socialist, almost communist leaning BF from the Basque region of Spain and the manager of our digs, plus her colleague. I argue my case for capitalism and Mr Spain tells me I'm talking shit: all conducted under several bottles of Rum BTW. The host and her colleague then absolutely destroy him, explaining the 6 hour wait in the queue for food, the 3 day wait: sleeping in your car for fuel.
The official CUP bank rate is 28.5 to the Euro, I get 160 to the Euro on the street, something is not right, the banks have no money!!

The people of Cuba want capitalism, not ration books like they have now. Capitalism  doesn't work for everyone, thats where the safety net which is the dole comes in, not to be used as a life style choice. Something a tiny blue person  on here refuse to accept.

The people of Cuba want capitalism,
What the people do NOT want is to return to being the USA's whorehouse and casino, as it was under Batista's dictatorship.
