It's a very sad world, and I keep on wondering how low this country will go.

OpenDemocracy has revealed that the Conservative Party, which has received more than £3.5 million from Russian funders since 2010, has actually stepped up its dependence on Russian donors to at least £489,850 in the last year, compared to £350,000 in the year previously.

The DCMS Committee also found evidence that Russia had access to a Cambridge Analytica database, which been compiled through the hacking of 50 to 170 million Facebook users, and deployed during both the EU Referendum and the 2016 Presidential Election campaign to target UK and US voters. This breach was referred to the National Crime Agency by the Information Commissioner, Elisabeth Denham.

Though he at first denied it, Farage met the Russian Ambassador Alexander Yakovenko in May 2013. After that meeting, Farage made almost monthly appearances on RT. Two years later at the UKIP Conference in October 2015, a senior embassy official, Alexander Udod, approached Farage's new funder, Arron Banks, and invited him to meet the Russian Ambassador too.



What followed was at least four meetings with Banks and the ambassador, which opened the door to at least three potentially lucrative investment opportunities in Russian-owned gold and state diamond mines. Though the gold consolidation deal was pursued for several months, Banks says he never took up any of these offers. However, an investment company run by a close colleague did take part in the privatisation of Alrosa diamond mines.

While Rees-Mogg does not himself manage the investments, he remains a co-founder and partner of SCM, where he normally earns £14,500 every month for 30 hours' work. It is unclear how much of Rees-Mogg's own money is invested with the firm, or the vehicles that are vested in the Russian companies. According to SCM's portfolio, published by Maitland Group in September 2018, the company's investments in EU and US-sanctioned Sberbank, Russia's largest bank, were worth £42.6 million; positions in Yandex, the Russian search engine known for passing confidential data to the FSB were worth £12.3 million and Mail.ru, the social media giant and parent of VK – the Russian version of Facebook – were worth £7.1 million.



Somerset Capital Management declined to comment on their Russian investments.

I've seen some of this before regarding Banks and the Russians. It was clear something fishy was going on with the UKIP for years. All of a sudden they became rich and TV favs.



Now this is why the UKIP is supposed to be finished, since it conveniently buries the past somewhat.



The country is falling apart. The Independent newspaper is Russian controlled and so are the Cons, and then you wonder who controls Corbyn eh? That's got to be the Russians as well.

I read that report and listened to the video and didn't hear any leaked testimony. The whole report and the video were reports about reports and rumours. Not really a quality news item, sadly.

Looks like we've more insight into what the Conservatives are trying to bury by not releasing the report into Russian interference in the UK.



We really need the report leaking before the election if it's going to have any legitimacy, especially given how much money the Conservatives are getting from Russian sources.
