Nick as per usual, you don't know what you are on about. At the time I went to Canada, 1986. My wife and I did need  visas the USA in case we were diverted there. You may ignore Foreign Office instructions, I don't.
So where did you get this visa, and what did you put down as reason for the visa and port of entry?
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

What actually happens in such a case is the USA immigration temporarily confiscate your passport, escort you to the gate of the needed flight to your real destination and hand your passport to the air crew who return it after the flight has left USA airspace.

Sat next to a guy on a flight who just had that happen to him at Miami.  Technically he was deported, he didn't seem worried.
He's been told this many times, he will NEVER accept that he's talking rot.
The fact being that when you apply for a U.S. visa they ask for purpose of visit and port of entry. In case I get diverted and don't know will not get you a visa.
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

For which you allegedly got a USA visa, like SW said, you wouldn't have been given one because you had absolutely no reason to get one.

I would not go to the USA for a bet or for an all expenses paid holiday.  A trip to Canada was close enough for me.

Seeing as you have never been, I don't suppose anyone will be taking advice from you.

A nation that I do not want to live in.
The feeling that could well turn out to be mutual — but there are parts of the US that I wouldn't want to live in, but some residents do and others strive to get there...

Between 1860 and the start of the 20th century, hundreds of thousands left Cornwall to seek their fortunes in Australia and the USA (notably Adelaide and California) — so maybe they helped one and hindered the other...
Not just Cornwall, England, Scotland and Ireland as well

The US forged ahead?  Really? Third world poverty, (the poor are not all black either.) They let psychopaths have free access to firearms, including the police.
Yes, the USA forged ahead to become the world's most powerful nation, while Britain tried to remain in control of its colonies and the Empire. This proved costly.

Neither Britain nor the Empire ultimately benefited, as the "self-governing" White empire effectively bankrolled the mother country. The USA had freed itself of that burden in 1776.

Nor should lockdown be...

Charities have warned that lockdown may have contributed to a rise in cases in some areas, with vulnerable youngsters stuck at home with abusive parents, grandparents, older siblings, or other family members.

If there was a national DNA database I suspect more people would be related to each other than is currently known.

Well it is cut out of several songs these days. (Or the songs not sung anymore.) Ag Pleez Deddy, Jeremy Taylor. Changed to negroes in the Sun has got his hat on, hip hip hip hooray. There are numerous other examples.
Actually a BBC chap lost his job over playing verse two

I never knew that verse existed, I naturally downloaded the song as fast as I could find it, and added it to the list for karaoke night
