OK, it's been lots of fun being cooped up for 7 weeks, clapping the carers, having fireworks and a street party...

... but the virus is on its way out so it is time to end the lockdown.

I hope that Boris gets on with that tomorrow.

The problem is that does not include nursing home deaths, deaths in specialist homes for variously disabled people and deaths at home.

Surely the virus is only dropping for those who have so far contacted it?  All of us who have been cooped up with little if any contact with the outside world are as vulnerable as ever. The virus won't be done until we have all had it either by person to person or injection, but I cannot believe that the end of the lock down will do anything other than start the process of infection all over again. Some German towns are already shutting down again due to the sudden rise in infections.

Excellent. Give those 20%  (13 million) an infected snot inhalation  :barf:

We'll be up to herd immunity levels in no time. However there will probably be another 26,000 deaths.

Much better odds than Russian roulette.

Well I guess those offering are the same sort who fought in the last war for the rest of us.

I read somewhere that one fifth of people would be prepared to be given a dose of the virus, go through whatever trauma is involved and get over it so they could go back to work.

I know some are convinced they  have had it. Some may have without symptoms. Any takers for the rest of us who look as though 4 walls will be our future?

Article by Melanie Phillips who plainly does not think we should relax the lockdown by much.

"HOW HAS IT COME TO THIS" INDEED. BUT NOW BORIS MUST KEEP HIS NERVE

To date the UK's figures for daily confirmed cases and deaths have not reduced since the peak and today there's actually a sharp increase in new cases to 6600.  While this is partly the result of rapidly expanded testing, it's representing a truer figure in comparison to many other countries.  The number of covid-19 deaths in hospitals has gone down a lot but the same's not true of care homes and out in the community.

Yet there's talk of easing lockdown on Monday. Surely lockdown needs to be extended and more strictly enforced. And mask wearing should be made compulsory in public. While it's no guarantee of safety, most other severely hit countries have introduced it and their caseload has gone down from the peak instead of staying on a plateau like the UK.  If nothing else, there's nothing to lose by making masks compulsory.

Iran lifted its lockdown mid April. The number of daily new cases showed a steady, copybook decline until 3 or 4 days ago - about 2 weeks after their lockdown was lifted. Now it's increasing sharply. Iran's graph should be studied very carefully by anyone responsible for making a decision about easing our lockdown.

Obviously there needs to be a safe and workable plan for how we do come out of lockdown and people need to be developing that now, but it's far too early to ease anything at the moment.

Israel lifting lockdown having had 240 deaths in 9 million population.

A remarkable result.

Spanish deaths are now less than 200 a day and the government still want to extend the state of alarm or emergency.

There is a great deal of opposition to this as the more rural provinces have very little effects, whilst Madrid has had the worst numbers of deaths almost anywhere.

The autonomous regions want to make their own regulations relating to this as it should be a devolved matter.

https://english.elpais.com/spanish_news/2020-05-04/spains-pm-gears-up-for-fight-to-extend-state-of-alarm.html">//https://english.elpais.com/spanish_news/2020-05-04/spains-pm-gears-up-for-fight-to-extend-state-of-alarm.html

However, in a state of emergency the government can ignore this devolved status. The PP are expected to vote against the government so Pedro has decided to make it a guilt trip: "Vote for a state of alarm or chaos".
